.Composition: a.Photographer’s proximity to the subject: I chose to be close to the construction of ink and pills in order to create various alterations in depth of field. This was also done to create different shadows on some of the pills and remove shadows on others. b.Lighting: I used a large bulb light around 7.0 to create high contrast and intense lighting. c.Contrast: Contrast is an important element of this photograph. Both between the colors used as well as the contrast between the colors and the white background/pills.
.Aboutness & Motivations & Method: In creating this image I intended to convey medications, especially the recreational use of prescription pills and the artificial happiness they produce as well as the dark side that often accompanies it. I used a construction of an idea and photographed it to produce this image.
.Context: This image deals with psychology as well as culture and chemicals. The theme has come up lately in the new, many films as well as in college life.
.Interpretation: Students in the class interpreted this photo as the recreational use of prescription drugs. One quote that I agreed with and appreciated was “The photo is dirty enough to be visually interesting and clean enough to be in a magazine.” It was interesting to hear the photograph be described as something that would be used editorially.
.Evaluation: Based on the critique I am pleased that my intention was received and interested in the editorial comments. I would not change anything.
.Extension: I enjoyed the construction of this image and plan to do more constructions involving color and concept.
