1.Composition: a.Orientation: The orientation of this photograph is portrait in a serious dramatic and glamorous setting shot from slightly below.
b.Lighting: The lighting is crucial in this image. I worked at length to make the lighting perfect and I feel I succeeded. I placed my bulb light on a completely shortened stand and angled it upward slightly towards the white wall in the background. The effect created a nice fall out and highlight on the subject.
c.Visual Design Elements (spot/line, shape/pattern, emphasis/balance): The lighting creates a balance and shape between shadow and light. The highlight from the light carries the viewer’s eye across the subject. The color of the drink creates emphasis. The lighting and shape of the subject is dramatic and highly graphic.
2.Aboutness & Motivations & Method: I was motivated by the TV show Mad Men. The thought came to mind when trying to discover and project something to express masculine gender without shooting sports cars and sports. Mad Men came up because it is a classy and classic depiction of the iconic male in the 1960s. Mad Men is about an advertising agency so it suits the image that it looks as if it could be an advertisement for an alcohol company. I had to work with the lighting to get the correct level of light on both the wall and the subject to enhance the drama. I knew exactly what look I was going for in my head and was pleased when I finally figured out how to manifest it.
3.Context: The gender and sexuality prompt lit the spark on this idea. I decided to use a simple black couch and white wall in the corner of my friend’s apartment in order to work mainly with the lighting and the simplicity of the sitter.
4.Interpretation: Students in the class thought I used a backdrop and not that it was fro m a light source. They appreciated it and were excited by it. They really enjoyed the lighting and the way the drink looked. They also thought it could be an advertisement.
5.Evaluation: Based on the critique I am very happy with this image. I am proud that my classmates appreciated my lighting and composition. I worked at creating the desired image I had in my minds eye and it worked!
6.Extension: I plan to reshoot in this exact location with the light in the same spot; the effect is desirable to me. I am thinking about making a series of different objects, one classmate suggested people holding different drinks.
