light

  1. Image Title: Samantha, Candlelight, Untitled #1

    1.Composition:
a.Orientation: The orientation of this photograph is portrait with an angle that leads the viewer to find the sitter. Scene, lighting and composition are very important in this image.

b.Lighting: The lighting is the most important aspect of this picture. The only light source in the image is from the tea candles used. I find the way they glow and light up the wall to be successful and they also created a nice cast in the correct spots on my sitter.

    c.Visual Design Elements (spot/line, shape/pattern, emphasis/balance):
The lights are used to carry the viewer’s eye through the photograph. I put her in the corner for the emotional aspect of being in a corner as well as being entirely surrounded by the candles. The steps also aid in carrying the viewer’s eye to the subject. I chose to blur everything in the image except the sitter to add to the wonder around her and the emotional content of her psychological state even though she is “wearing her heart on her sleeve.”

    2.Aboutness & Motivations & Method:
The motivation for this image was to use candlelight in a wood surrounding to create a warm and emotional scene. I added the red and hearts to enhance this concept.

    3.Context:
This photograph is simply a portrait in an emotional environment that allows for interpretation and storytelling with cues of light, love and inquiry. The setting is slightly odd, but raw, which is why I used it. Similarly, the use of small candles in a wood surrounding is slightly dangerous and not practical, therefore adding to the psychological context in a dreamlike way.

4.Interpretation: Students in the class appreciated the location of the sitter and the sole light source being the candles. They found it interesting, especially the candles and the wood setting which they were torn between bring emotional and, or, creepy.

5.Evaluation: Based on the critique I am considering reshooting this. A comment was made to make the candles in front in focus which I can easily do since I added the blur to the image in photoshop. Also the comment was made that the candles around her should be spread out more but that the candles coming up the stairs were in a perfect location. I did not get the “perfect” image for the concept in my head, although I am very satisfied with the way this print came out. The natural light is warming to me and evokes a positive emotion.

6.Extension: I would like to shoot more in this setting, with candlelight as the only light source. I will possibly re-shoot the same image.
