1.Composition: a.Orientation: The orientation of this photograph is portrait. The subject is a stranger and was shot from a distance without her knowledge, while doing her work in the studio.
b.Lighting: To me, the lighting makes this photograph art. The room was lit enough for the artists to see their work but the particular way this light was cast on her makes the rest of the room seem darker. The only light source used was the natural light coming from a window at and angle to the right above her. The way the lighting accents and highlights her body is very pleasing to me.
c.Visual Design Elements (spot/line, shape/pattern, emphasis/balance): The lighting creates and outline of her body and artwork that carries the viewers eye through the image. The light emphasizes the shapes in the image that are important to view and does not highlight those that are not aka the background. The image is balanced by the position of the subject in relation to the background and it does not bother me that the subject is in the center because she is in action and her work becomes an extension of herself.
2.Aboutness & Motivations & Method: I went to the studio to investigate what my friend was working on and had my camera with me. The room was an incredible place to shoot and was very inspiring. I shot the subject from a far, without her knowledge. I did not use a tripod or lighting so I am impressed wit the way it turned out. The fact that she is not 100% sharp does not bother me because her sculpture that she is working on is in full focus and in a way it is an extension of her and therefore also the subject.
3.Context: The lighting that highlights the subject and her art create a second meaning to the image about form and light on top of the scene of a stranger doing her work. Because the image is of a stranger and was not planned, the context is very similar to the aboutness and motivations that I explained above.
4.Interpretation: Students in the class were shocked that this was natural light and not planned which pleased me! They thought it was perfect for being natural light with no editing.
5.Evaluation: Based on the critique I am very happy with this image. I am proud that my classmates appreciated my use of spontaneity and natural light as well as the fact that there was not extensive editing used.
6.Extension: I would like to shoot more in this setting; however, it will likely be with a person I bring into the studio.
